Kotagiri, also called the second Switzerland and situated on an ‘Open Terrace' at an elevation of 5882 ft, is the oldest of the hill stations in Nilgiris. Kotagiri area was long occupied by the indigenous tribal peoples of the Kota (hence the name Kotagiri), Toda, Kurumba, Irula and Badagas.

Tucked away in the primeval forests of the Nilgiris, Kotagiri is a beautiful little hill station that is often overlooked by travellers heading to its more famous neighbor, Ooty. The most popular trekking trails in Kotagiri are towards Kodanad, Catherine Falls and Longwood Shola. The trail leading to Kodanad goes through meadows, tea estates and the Moyar River. The major attractions near Kotagiri include the Catherine Falls, Elk Falls, Doddabetta Range and the Rangaswami Pillar. Kodanad Point offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys
